My guess would be that they are protecting/guarding the entrance, but they may also be sterilizing it with propolis since they just moved in.

I’ve discovered a wild hive in an oak tree recently when the bees were swarming……since then, I’ve noticed a large number of individuals surrounding the ent. hole to the hive within the tree. Probably several hundred….with other bees still fly in n out as a matter of course. Question why have the bees remained around the ent. for so long…..it was very warm, but now for a couple of days it’s cool, n they’re still around the ent. hole in large numbers (bearding). Why? Thank you for you insight! John
