What you called a “fork”, we called a “scraper” or “scratcher”. Instead of trying to get under the caps using a “fork”, we simply scratched the caps off. I use this method for the couple of hives that I now keep in my backyard in the city. It does require some type of filter to collect the wax as the honey drains from the extractor. I use a wire sieve and it works perfectly.

We use a $2 bread knife, the finer serrated teeth the better.

I bought the roller a couple years ago, it does a good job of making a small hole in the cap, but not enough to spin room temperature honey- we do not heat out honey. We use a 9 frame electric extractor, The roller is useless for us,

The uncapping fork is pretty awesome once you figure out the 2% rule- you have to be 2% smarter than the equipment you are working with. At first I was vertically jabbing the fork into the caps, then a year or two later my daughter picked it up and went right to town with it on her frame, it’s awesome. We use the knife and fork. In beekeeping, you have to learn anyway you can, from the bees, from your children..
