I have had three hives in back yard over past 4 years
I had beekeeper take the first two
Number 3 built in a hanging bird house. It grew large and then most of them left. But I had a couple dozen left. They built a huge hive and many bees.
I love watching them and decided to keep them and hope to get then a real bee box

We installed a swarm last year and I closed all the entrances, left some sugar syrup in a baggie in the bottom of the hive so they would have something to eat. I noticed there were a number of bees who were trying to get into the hive, felt sorry for them, and opened one of the openings so they could go in. Well, they didn’t go in but the queen apparently didn’t like the hive and she flew off bringing the whole swarm with her. So how to keep them in the TBH and what to do with the stragglers who want to get in?

Just wondering about the height placement. You have mentioned 6-15.. inches/feet/cm? What measurement are you using?

My bees died this spring. I was a fool. They survived the winter and had some honey left, so, when the fruit trees were in blossom, I thought they would be fine. What I didn’t take into account was that the temperatures were so cool that the bees didn’t come out of the hive to gather nectar. I literally starved my poor little bees to death. It won’t happen again. I want more bees, but can’t afford them right now, so I was wondering how to capture a wild swarm. I know there are no guarantees, but I was thrilled to get your info. Thanks again!!! Happy beekeeping!!!

You are unlikely to get a queen or the colony to “leave” their hive. You would have to do a cut-out, which is opening the wall or location in the building and physically remove the bees and comb and establish them in a hive. Youtube has numerous videos to show you how; I do about 25-30 each year with 95% success rate, sometimes the bees just don’t like the hive you put them in.

Most municipalities allow beekeeping, but it is best to check with your immediate neighbors to see if there is anyone that is allergic to stings.

I’m new to this subject on bees. Wanting to learn more i subscribed to this site. I’m a city dweller. Been so, can i have a bee colony in my back yard? Leave in Tampa,FL. Your answer will help me start a colony in my back yard, following your tactics. Also know where is a colony in an old building. How can i make the queen bee get into a new hive to take that colony from there? Thank you.
