I buy books from the bee supplie store. I would love to learn about the moths an nettles .lost two hives to them and now I heard about mites..all my bees died and I bought a new batch with breed queen .every thing looks good she’s doing a great job laying eggs and workers are gathering pollen. I need to learn all I can .and just have one hive. To keep going An learn.how to decide from it to make more .then add new hives and new bees by next year. ..I hope anyway.

I am a new beek and am considering top entrance.
But was told the more entrances, the more access for shin and moths.
M. Bush uses small shims under a piece of plywood for his top entrance. And outer cover. With a reduced. Year round. But says you need at least a small 3/8 hole under the queen excluder so the drones can get out of the hive.
My question is: can I use his idea or should I use a Emerie spacer? I’m not find of drilling holes in my supers.

Since Langstroth and TB hive frames are not interchangeable you would need to cut out your comb and rubber band it into Langstroth frames. Or better yet simply provide your TB colony a Langstroth box with drawn comb frames. To make sure the colony does not abscond from the new Langstroth box, seal it’s entrance for 24 hours, with a top feeder on it after transferring all bees and the queen to it. This will prevent the queen from absconding and she will start to lay eggs and call the new box home. You will want to do this late in the evening to make sure most foraging bees are put into the new box. Alternatively, you can do it mid-day and simply place the new Langstroth box, and it’s entrance where the old TB hives entrance was. The bees will find their way in. If you use this method though, caging the queen for 24 hours is advisable to prevent absconding since youll leave the entrance open for returning bees.

Bees do not need a landing board period. Ive seen a lot of wild hives in my time. On trees, downed logs, etc…To date not a single one of them had a landing board 🙂

When you go to lift the box you will be placing the palm of your hand over the hole, a good way to get stung.
See any wax moths lately?

In my hives, I’ve covered the bottom entrance and drilled a hole near the top. Sometimes, I attach a little wooden landing board for them up there, as I like to watch them come and go.

Do you use a regular bottom board and block off the entrance?
Thanks
